Playground alternative
BackPR vs Playground
Playground is all-in-one childcare software for home-based programs, centers, multi-site groups, Head Start, before- and after-care and camps. It doesn't publish pricing or processing rates, and its paid subscriptions renew automatically. BackPR is free for nonprofits, uses Stripe's standard rates and has no long-term contract.

| Cost for nonprofits | $0 to BackPR: no subscription and no BackPR fees. Stripe's processing fees still apply. | No published nonprofit pricing. Through state partnerships, some providers in Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas and New York can use Playground at no cost; eligibility and end dates vary by state. |
| Pricing | Nonprofits: $0. Other organizations: custom quote. | Not published; the pricing link leads to a demo request. Billing, enrollment and subsidy tools are included in the core subscription. Websites are a paid add-on. |

| Contract | No long-term contract. Cancel anytime with no exit fees. | Paid subscriptions renew automatically for the same term at the then-current rate unless you turn off renewal in account settings. After canceling, access lasts to the end of the term, with no prorated refund. Term lengths aren't published. |
| Onboarding and data import | Free, including data import. | Free data migration, with a dedicated onboarding manager for every customer and hands-on setup. |

The difference
Where BackPR is different
Free for nonprofits
Nonprofits pay nothing to BackPR, in any state. Playground doesn't publish its pricing or any nonprofit pricing; some providers in five states can use it at no cost through state partnerships.
Card rates you can look up
For nonprofits, BackPR payments run at Stripe's standard, published rates with nothing added, and you choose whether to absorb them or pass them on. Playground also processes payments on Stripe but doesn't publish its processing rates.
No auto-renewing subscription
BackPR has no long-term contract, so you can cancel anytime. Playground's terms renew paid subscriptions automatically at the then-current rate, with no prorated refund after canceling.
Website included
Nonprofits can publish a simple BackPR website with their programs at no cost, or embed registration on their own site. Playground sells websites as a paid add-on and publishes no nonprofit pricing.
In fairness
What Playground does well
Playground covers a childcare program's back office in one system: billing with autopay that programs can make mandatory, next-business-day payouts, subsidy billing, expenses, full-service payroll, CACFP food program records and enrollment forecasting. Its AI assistant, Camber, answers inquiry calls. It offers free data migration, a dedicated onboarding manager, an app in English and Spanish, and weekly updates with a public changelog.
