Nonprofit status checker: look up IRS tax-exempt status
Search the IRS list of tax-exempt organizations by EIN or by name. See whether an organization is listed as a 501(c)(3) and whether it's likely to qualify for free BackPR.
Searches only look up public IRS data, and we don't use them to contact you or for marketing.
The data
Where the data comes from
The checker searches a copy of the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File, the IRS's public list of organizations it recognizes as tax-exempt. We refresh it regularly, and each result shows the date of the IRS file.
A 501(c)(3) listing means the IRS recognizes the organization as a charity. Other 501(c) types, such as social welfare organizations and social clubs, are tax-exempt too, and many of them qualify for free BackPR.
Not every nonprofit is listed. Churches don't have to apply to the IRS for recognition, and groups covered by a parent organization's group exemption often appear only under the parent. If yours isn't found, email us and we'll check.
We confirm every organization's status when it signs up. This checker uses only public IRS data, and BackPR isn't affiliated with the IRS.
FAQ
Questions, answered
What's an EIN?
An Employer Identification Number: the 9-digit federal tax ID the IRS gives an organization. It's on your IRS determination letter and on your organization's tax filings.
Why isn't our church listed?
Churches are tax-exempt without applying to the IRS, so many never appear in the IRS list. Email us and we'll confirm your status another way.
Does a listing mean we qualify for free BackPR?
A 501(c)(3) listing usually does: BackPR is free for registered nonprofits. We confirm every organization when it signs up and tell you if we need anything else.
