The math
How it works
Direct costs are wages, fringe benefits (wages times your fringe rate), supplies and other direct costs.
Indirect costs are direct costs times your indirect rate. The total budget is direct plus indirect costs.
Cost per child is the total budget divided by children served. The amount to request is the total budget minus other funding.
FAQ
Questions, answered
What's an indirect cost rate?
A percentage added to your direct costs to cover overhead, such as office rent, insurance, accounting and administration. Many funders cap it or set their own rules, and some apply it to only part of your direct costs, so check before you apply.
What do funders usually ask us to report?
Most ask for children served, attendance and outcomes. The grant attendance report in our free templates has a monthly attendance table you can fill in.
