The data
What goes on a receipt
Form 2441, which parents use to claim the child and dependent care credit, asks for each care provider's name, address and taxpayer identification number (an EIN for an organization) and the amount paid during the year.
A 501(c)(3) organization doesn't have to give its EIN. It can give its name and address and write "tax-exempt" instead (IRS Form W-10).
Day camp, before- and after-school care and childcare for children under 13 can count. Overnight camp doesn't, and neither does tuition for kindergarten and up (IRS Publication 503).
A dependent care FSA claim generally needs a statement from the provider showing the care, the dates and the amount. Each plan has its own claim form. Our guide to childcare tax receipts has the details.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Do we have to give parents our EIN?
Generally, a care provider gives its taxpayer identification number when a parent asks for it. A 501(c)(3) organization doesn't have to, and can write "tax-exempt" instead (IRS Form W-10).
Does summer camp count for the dependent care credit?
Day camp can, even one built around a single activity. Overnight camp doesn't (IRS Publication 503). Parents should ask a tax professional about their own situation.
When should we send year-end statements?
The IRS doesn't set a date for providers. Parents usually file in early spring, so sending statements in January gives them time.
