At the top: Adults: please sign your child in and out every day with the time and your full signature. Children leave only with their parents, guardians or adults on their authorized pickup list. Staff will check photo ID for anyone they don't know.

Tips

How to use it well

  • Print children's names in the first column ahead of time, so you can see at a glance who hasn't arrived or left.
  • Keep the authorized pickup lists with the sheet, and check them every time an adult you don't know arrives.
  • At closing, make sure every child who signed in has signed out before staff leave.
  • Keep completed sheets for as long as your state's licensing rules require. They're also your proof of attendance for grants and subsidies.

Questions, answered

Do parents need to sign kids in and out?

Most licensed programs keep a daily record with the time and the adult's signature for each drop-off and pickup, and many funders ask for it as proof of attendance. Check your state's licensing rules for exactly what to record.

What if someone who isn't on the pickup list comes for a child?

Don't release the child. Ask for photo ID and call the parent or guardian. Release the child only if a parent or guardian adds that adult in writing, as your pickup policy allows. If the adult becomes upset or tries to take the child, call 911.
