What happened
- May 1, 2026: PlayMetrics completed its purchase of substantially all of SportsEngine's assets from Versant Media Group. The deal covers SportsEngine HQ (club, league and team management), Motion (studio and class-based sports), Tourney (tournaments), Play (video), AES (volleyball competition management) and SportsEngine's payments products. The price wasn't disclosed.
- NCSI (the National Center for Safety Initiatives), the background screening company SportsEngine had owned, wasn't part of the sale, according to Youth Sports Business Report. LeagueApps announced on July 8, 2026 that it had acquired NCSI.
- PlayMetrics also owns Sports Connect, and Little League, AYSO and others are moving from Sports Connect to PlayMetrics' own platform (see Sports Connect and PlayMetrics).
What customers have been told
- PlayMetrics CEO Mike Doernberg said in the May 1 announcement that customers "can expect the same great service they rely on today" and will gain access to PlayMetrics' other technology.
- SportsEngine is still being developed. It posted a product update on July 27, 2026, and on May 14, 2026, USA Swimming named SportsEngine its official team management partner in a deal that runs through 2030.
- As of October 21, 2026, we found no announced migration date, price change or payment processing change for SportsEngine customers.
What to do now
Nothing requires you to move. But a change of owner is a good time to check your setup before your next renewal. If your national governing body requires SportsEngine for memberships, follow its guidance. We found no announced change to those programs.
- Find your renewal date and notice period, and put both on your calendar.
- Export your data and keep a copy your board can reach: members, registrations, payments and balances.
- Review what you pay and what families pay at checkout. Our SportsEngine comparison lists SportsEngine's published plans and fees.
- If you run background checks through NCSI, LeagueApps says "everything organizations currently rely on continues as it is." Confirm that your screening setup and pricing stay the same.
- Watch for notices about payment processing or a move to PlayMetrics' platform, and ask for any change in writing.
- Compare your options: see BackPR next to PlayMetrics, LeagueApps and TeamSnap.
Moving to BackPR
If you're free to choose, BackPR is one option. We set up your account and import your members, families and programs from a spreadsheet or another system's export at no cost, and there's no long-term contract. You can export your data at any time. BackPR is free for registered nonprofits: no subscription and no BackPR fees, and BackPR never adds its own fee to what families pay. Card payments run on Stripe at Stripe's standard rates. Pricing for other organizations is by quote. See how switching works. More on BackPR for sports programs.
