Tips

How to use it well

  • Do the mid-summer review early enough that staff have time to improve.
  • Base ratings on things you saw, and write them down during the summer.
  • Keep evaluations in each person's staff file.

Rules on ratios, medication and reporting vary by state. See your state in our state-by-state rules for youth programs.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do you evaluate camp counselors?

Watch them through the summer and rate a few areas: safety and supervision, how they treat campers, reliability and teamwork, and communication. Go over the ratings with them halfway through and again at the end.

Why do a mid-summer evaluation?

It gives counselors specific feedback while there's still time to improve, and makes the end-of-summer rehire decision fairer.
