Camper behavior agreement

A short agreement between the camp, the camper and their family after repeated behavior problems: the goals, the support that staff will give and what happens next.

What's in it

What the behavior agreement covers

At the top: We use this agreement when a camper needs extra help following our code of conduct. It sets a few goals, the support we'll give and the next steps.

Camper

  • Full name
  • Age
  • Group and counselor
  • Date of meeting

What has been happening

Describe the behavior, not the child.

  • What we've seen (dates and examples)
  • What we've already tried

Goals

  • Goal 1
  • Goal 2
  • Goal 3

How staff will help

  • Support (for example, a seat near the counselor, a break spot, a check-in at lunch)
  • How we'll share progress with the family, and how often

How the family will help

  • What the family will do at home

If the behavior continues

Before any shorter day or removal, we meet with the family and, if the camper has a disability, consider reasonable changes that could help. Next steps may then include a shorter day or, if the camper's behavior puts others at risk, removal from the program. [Add your refund policy.]

Review date

  • We'll meet again on

Tips

How to use it well

  • Meet with the family before you write the goals. Ask what works at home and at school.
  • Keep goals few, specific and positive: "keeps hands to self in line" rather than "stops hitting."
  • Tell the camper's counselors what's in the plan so everyone responds the same way.
  • If a child has a disability, talk with the family about reasonable changes that could help, and do it before any decision to shorten the day or send the camper home.

Rules on ratios, medication and reporting vary by state. See your state in our state-by-state rules for youth programs.
