Swim test record

A lifeguard's sheet for recording each camper's swim test, the swim level or band they earned and where they may swim.

What's in it

What the swim test record covers

At the top: Test every camper in the water before their first swim, no matter what their parent marked on the form. Have a second lifeguard watch during every test. Test non-swimmers and beginners in shallow water only. Retest anyone who seems unsure. Write your own pass rules below and train lifeguards on them.

Test details

  • Pool or waterfront
  • Date
  • Lifeguard or water safety instructor testing
  • Pass rules for each level (for example, swim 25 yards, tread water 1 minute)

Levels

Example: Red = shallow water only, with a life jacket if required. Yellow = shallow and middle areas. Green = all areas. Change these to match your waterfront.

Results

Table: Camper name · Group · Parent-reported ability · Level earned · Band color · Tester initials · Retest date and result

Free to use and change, but not legal or medical advice. Check your state's licensing rules and your insurer's requirements, and have a lawyer review any consent or waiver language.

Tips

How to use it well

  • Mark each camper's level with a colored band or cap so lifeguards can see it from the chair.
  • Post the list at the pool or waterfront, and give each group leader a copy.
  • Test again at each new swim site, such as a lake trip.
  • Follow your state's camp swimming rules and your insurer's requirements for lifeguard ratios and certifications.

Rules on ratios, medication and reporting vary by state. See your state in our state-by-state rules for youth programs.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is a camp swim test?

A short test in the water that shows how well a camper swims. The result sets where they may swim and is usually marked with a colored band or cap.

Should camps trust the swim level parents report?

Use it as a starting point only. Test every camper in the water before their first swim, because ability can change and parents sometimes guess.
